A Personal Invite

I feel like my whole life has been preparing me for this moment.

I know that may seem like an overstatement, but I sincerely don’t believe it is.

Growing in my spiritual growth, as well as helping others do the same, has been a primary area of focus (if not the primary area of focus) over the last twenty years of my life. That’s why I want to personally invite you to ….

The 3 F’s of spiritual growth

During these last twenty years, I’ve observed, in my life as well as in the lives of many others, three consistent challenges in a person’s spiritual growth. I call these the 3 F’s.

  • Frustration with our ongoing and consistent spiritual growth.
  • A lack of Focus in our spiritual growth.
  • A sense of Failure in our spiritual growth.

This is why over the last 20 years I’ve tried to find a way to offer clear and concise content, along with a simple “practice” that’s easily doable within the routine of our 24/7 life – to help people consistently grow in their spiritual lives – and to do this all in the context of a like-minded group of people.

My New Spiritual Growth Membership Community

That’s why I’m launching my new Spiritual Growth Membership Community. It’s a way to help people, like you and me, consistently grow in our spiritual growth.

My Four 1 to 1 Plan

Here’s what the spiritual growth membership community will provide. I call it the FOUR 1 to 1 plan.

  • Once a Month. The first of every month, via a short email containing a link to a short video (10 minutes or less) you will receive:
  • One Spiritual Growth Principle. This isn’t a bible study, or a podcast, or a sermon; it’s a simple, clear, and concise spiritual growth principle – that will help you grow.
  • One Spiritual Growth Practice. Along with this spiritual growth principle, you will receive a spiritual growth practice that will help you apply/practice that month’s spiritual growth principle. One of the things I’m so excited about is that this spiritual growth practice can be done throughout the normal routine of a person’s 24/7 day. You don’t have to find another two hours in your already busy schedule to fit in this spiritual practice. It can be done almost anytime and anywhere throughout your day.

NOTE: It’s the combination of these two things –a monthly spiritual growth principle connected to and corresponding with a monthly spiritual growth practice – that will help you grow. Transformation (growth) happens when we combine information (content), with application (practice), and that’s the brilliance of my Spiritual Growth Membership Community

  • One Like-Minded Community. This will all be done in the context of a Like-Minded Group of People/Community. Just think about being inspired, encouraged, and offered new ideas from a group of people who have the same goal in mind – to consistently grow in their spiritual lives.

A Personal Promise

Now that I’ve:

  • applied this approach in my own spiritual growth,
  • seen the amazing results it’s had on my wife’s spiritual growth,
  • seen the same results with several of the people I’m now coaching in their spiritual growth,

I’m convinced I’ve found a way to offer you clear and concise content, with a simple “practice” that’s easily doable within the normal routine of your 24/7 life – all in the context of a like-minded group of people – that will help you consistently grow in your spiritual life.

There is absolutely nothing like this being offered today! Therefore I’m extremely excited to offer this Spiritual Growth Membership Community to you. I would truly be honored if you would be a part of it with me and hundreds of others.

What Do You and I and Michael Phelps Have in Common?

michaelphelps

He’s done it again!

Coming out of retirement to compete in his 5th Olympics, Michael Phelps, at the age of 31, has won another 6 medals, making him the most decorated Olympian ever!

28 Medals

23 Gold         3 Sliver         2  Bronze

So what do you and I and Michael Phelps have in common?

Let’s see…

I’ve never been to the Olympics.

I’ve never been in the Olympics.

I won a trophy in Little League once (it’s still in my parents’ attic) but never won a gold medal (or silver, or bronze).

I can swim, barely.

I’ve never been on the front of a Wheaties box or Sports Illustrated (or even a “wanted poster”).

I don’t have endorsement deals with Louis Vuitton, Under Armour, Visa, Omega, Hilton, Procter & Gamble, Subway, or Hewlett Packard.

My net worth isn’t 50 million dollars.

So what do I (and my guess is the same with you) have in common with Michael Phelps?

On one level the answer is NOTHING!

EXCEPT…

On another level we have this in common…

Growth and greatness are always the result of a lot of hard work over a long period of time.

If we want to “succeed”—let’s call it making a meaningful contribution with our life to our world—then we have the same thing in common; it takes a lot of hard work over a long period of time to do so!

  • When we see a gymnast become an “overnight celebrity” at the Olympics, we shouldn’t forget that the three minute performance of perfection that flung her to stardom was the result of thousands and thousands of hours of practice in the privacy of a gym.
  • When Michael Phelps becomes the most decorated Olympian of all time, let’s not forget that he logged hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of miles in the pool—stroke by stoke, day by day, and year by year for 24 years—before he reached his platform of “success.”

Malcolm Gladwell, in his book, Outliers, has described this idea of “a lot of hard work over a long period of time” as the 10,000 hours to mastery. Malcolm’s research shows that it takes approximately 10,000 hours of practice to master something.

It is true that some people have more talent than others, and granted some people have more opportunity than others. It’s also true that some people have had good “breaks” while others haven’t.

(Melinda Gates recently said that her husband Bill, in starting Microsoft and becoming one of the richest men in the world, just “happened to be in the right place, at the right time, with the right idea.” )

But, when it comes right down to it, what we put our efforts toward over a long period of time determines who we become and what we accomplish.

In fact, in a recent interview Phelps emphatically stated, “Swimming has been my life for 24 years.”

So let me ask you,

“What are you giving your life to?” AND  “What are you giving your life for?”

In the end, you and I and Michael Phelps are the same.

If I can assist you in finding and fulfilling your dreams, I’d love to help:

If You Have A Dream…Please read this and Please don’t give up!

hiking

If you have a dream—something you want to accomplish—”staying-with-it” is vital.

All of us have days (or weeks, or months, and maybe even years) where it seems our dreams will never come about; not even close!

If you have a dream—whatever it is you want to accomplish—please read the rest of this blog, and please, please don’t give up!

The Diary of Anne Frank

One of the publishers who rejected the proposal of Anne Frank’s The Diary of Anne Frank wrote a fellow publisher and said, “This girl doesn’t have any special projection or feeling that would lift that book above the curiosity level.” More than twenty-five million copies of The Diary of Anne Frank have been sold worldwide, and it continues to sell.

Lord of the Flies

When the manuscript for the classic Lord of the Flies was submitted, the publishers commented, “It does not seem to me that you’ve been wholly successful in working out this idea.” More than 14.5 million copies have been sold to date.

Animal Farm

Of George Orwell’s book, Animal Farm, one publisher said, “It is impossible to sell animal stories in the United States.” Animal Farm has sold more than ten million copies.

The Jungle Book

In a rejection letter sent to Rudyard Kipling for a manuscript he had submitted titled The Jungle Book, the publisher sent back this note: “I’m sorry, Mr. Kipling, but you just don’t know how to use the English language.”

Chicken Soup for the Soul

Chicken Soup for the Soul was turned down 144 times before it was finally picked up by a publisher. As of now, the Chicken Soup for the Soul books have been translated into 43 languages, have been published in over 100 countries, and have sold more than 500 million copies worldwide.

Your dream may not be to write a book (although stats show that about 80% of people surveyed would like to), but whatever your dream is: to be a great mom, to run a marathon, to start a business, to sail around the world, to find a cure for cancer, to…..

…whatever it may be…

keep at it.

Your day will come!

If I can assist you in finding and fulfilling your dreams, I’d love to help:

Why I recently moved back to Cleveland, Ohio (and why you should even care)!

lebron

My wife, Missy, and I recently moved from Minneapolis, Minnesota—where we lived for eight years–back to Cleveland, Ohio, where I had previously lived for twenty-five years.

“So why is this relevant to you and why should you even care?” Well, I’m glad you asked.

We moved back for two reasons.

(And it’s not because the Cleveland Cavs won the NBA championship or that Cleveland is one of America’s premier come-back cities.  Although those are both pretty good reasons!)

  • First, we wanted to be closer to our family.

A lot of my family, and some very close friends, live in the Cleveland area. My mom passed almost two years ago and her death got me thinking–”I don’t really want to be away from my family over these next, and latter, years of my life.”  Then, I found out I was going to have my first grandchild, and nothing could keep me away from that!

  • Second, I felt a shift in my ministry.

I’ve been pastoring for thirty-five years, with thirty of those years as a senior pastor. Over the last few years I’d noticed that my passion about “general pastoral ministry” was waning, yet my passion about other, more focused areas of my ministry, was increasing.  So I made the move to focus on what I know I’m called to do–and want to do–over the next 10 to 15 years of my life and ministry. (I’m asking God for 15 more years of fruitful ministry.)

The two areas I’m focusing on for the next season of my life and ministry are:

Assisting people in their personal and spiritual growth

AND

Helping leaders live well while they lead well

These two areas sum up the essence of who I have become and what I want to accomplish. I’ll be doing this by speaking, training, writing, and coaching as my full-time vocation.

Why is any of this relevant to you and why should you even care?

Let me give you two reasons:

  • One, over twenty-five years ago I worked on a personal life’s mission statement. I’ve been living my life according to this mission statement ever since. Of course it has changed a bit over the years, but only slightly. Taking the time and making the effort, when I was in my 30’s, to consider who I wanted to become and what I wanted to accomplish gave me my life’s “North Star,” which has led me to where I am today: knowing what I want to do and how I want to do it – for the rest of my life.
  • Two, this move has taken courage and pushed me out of my comfort zone. I left a great city and a great church that I was pastoring. Every two weeks I knew I was going to get paid – and getting a pretty good paycheck at that. But I also realized that for me to move into the next season of fruitfulness and fulfillment (these two go together!), I would have to leave my “comfort zone” and take a step of courage. So after a lot of planning, and a lot of prayer, that’s what I did.

So what’s the application?

  • Are you living your life according to the unique contribution you were designed and destined to make?

And

  • Are you taking the intentional, and sometimes scary, steps to move into your next season of fruitfulness and fulfillment?

I’m trying to.  I trust you are as well.

If I can assist you in your ongoing personal or spiritual growth, know I’d love to help. You can find much of the information on my coaching page. You can also make contact with me through my enrollment conversation contact form.

If I can assist you, I’d love to help.

Keeping It Simple

carrick

We have a way of complicating things.

This can be illustrated in a thousand different ways (but I won’t use that many illustrations because I don’t want to complicate things.) So let’s just use one example—instruction manuals.

Just the sight of one causes me to twitch. Whether the instructions are to help me—or should I say, “supposed to help me”—install the latest computer software, fix the dishwasher, or assemble a book shelf, what could be explained in three pages takes thirty, and after reading just one page, I’m more confused than ever. What goes where?…in what order?…facing which direction?…in what slot?…with which screw? (I’m already starting to twitch.)

I know some of you don’t identify with what I’m saying. You love reading instruction manuals. Tinkering with something until you get it figured out or fixed is an enjoyable, recreational experience for you. But I need to tell you, you’re not normal. (Although if you don’t mind, can I give you a call the next time my garage door opener won’t work?!)

However, my point is—we make the gospel and the Christian journey way too complicated. The longer we go, it’s our tendency to add more and more theories, theologies, responsibilities, obligations, meetings, activities, etc. etc. etc. etc… What starts out as a life of joy and freedom quickly becomes a life of duty and drudgery.

When my spiritual journey gets cluttered and complicated, I’ve learned the importance of going back to the basics. God loved me so much that He sent His Son so that I can have an abundant and eternal life. I was lost, but now I’m found. I was blind, but now I see. Or the simple song I sang as a child, “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so…”

The Christian journey and the good news of the gospel are not as complicated as we sometimes make them. He loves us, we love Him, and, as a result, we should love others. Let’s keep it simple. It’s more enjoyable that way.

Oh yeah, gotta go call the plumber. My hot water heater isn’t working, and I’m not sure I should turn any more knobs or push any more buttons. I have no idea what I’m doing, the manual hasn’t helped, and I certainly don’t want to blow the house up!

My In-Laws & Grace

inlaws

Awhile back, my in-laws were in town and stayed with us for several days. They’re really great in-laws. They deeply love and support their family; they treat my wife like a princess, and I think they’ve taken “a liking” to me—at least that’s what they say.

But the challenge I have with my in-laws is their generosity. Whenever we’re together, they take us out to eat at nice restaurants, or we play golf on beautiful courses, or we go shopping and they buy us things or… Don’t get me wrong, it’s wonderful, but the catch is they insist on paying for everything. A few winters back my wife and I spent two weeks with my in-laws in Florida, and—yep, you guessed it—they paid for everything! (I’ve already put my reservation in for this winter, but instead of two weeks, I’m thinking of two months!)

On one hand, my in-laws’ generosity is wonderful, but on the other, it makes me uneasy. Every time I’m the recipient of their goodwill, I have these thoughts running through my head: “Now Kenny, don’t forget, there’s no such thing as a free lunch. There’s got to be a catch here somewhere, and sooner or later you’re going to have to pay for this.” Or, as my father in-law is picking up yet another tab, in the back of my mind I’m thinking, “Mr. Parsons, I’m taking really good care of your daughter. I’m treating her right. I’m providing well for her. Honestly, I am!”

My in-laws have never implied that their generosity is a way to get something in return from me, but at times it’s still difficult to accept the generosity because I feel I’ve got to do something to earn it or at least do something to pay it back.

My relationship with my in-laws is a picture of how many of us relate with grace. Donald Miller, in his book, Blue Like Jazz, describes it this way:

For a very long time, I could not understand why some people have no trouble accepting the grace of God while others experience immense difficulty. I counted myself as one of the ones who had trouble. I would hear about grace, read about grace, and even sing about grace, but accepting grace is an action I could not understand. It seemed wrong to me not to have to pay for my sin, not to feel guilty about it or kick myself around. More than that, grace did not seem like the thing I was looking for. It was too easy. I wanted to feel as though I earned forgiveness, as though God and I were buddies doing favors for each other.

Our biggest problem with grace is that it can’t be earned. It’s given generously out of God’s great love for us—with no strings attached. And for many of us, that makes us uncomfortable. But when I contrast my ongoing shortcomings with God’s endless and unconditional love for me, I am deeply grateful and profoundly humbled by grace. And the more I reflect upon grace and the more I immerse myself in grace, the more I am still amazed by grace.

I hope you still are …

 Your Turn

  • What is it about grace that makes it hard for you to accept grace?
  • How have you learned to embrace grace?
  • Are you still amazed by grace?
