If I Had Only Six Months To Live…

If you knew you only had six months to live, what would you do with those six months?

Here’s what I would do.

  • I’d spend most of the time with my family and a few close friends. Loving, laughing, reminiscing, reflecting, praying…preparing.
  • I’d spend time recording (either through writing or via video) the most important things I’ve learned in life – things that might help other people as they live their life.
  • I’d think long and hard and determine if there was anyone – even in the slightest way – that I needed to ask forgiveness of or mend a relationship with.
  • I’d share the gospel with every person that I randomly came in contact with during those six months; pleading with them to receive the freedom and forgiveness that’s found through the gospel of Jesus Christ.
  • I’d spend time in worship in anticipation of shortly seeing Jesus – the only true Lord and lover of my soul.

 How about you?

If you knew you only had six months to live, what would you do?

After listing the answers to that question, here’s a follow up one.

Are you doing those things now? If the things you just listed would be the most important things in your life if you knew you only had six months to live, are they the most important things in your life now?

Doing what we say is important to us while we’re alive is the only way we will leave the kind of legacy we want when we die.

I’m 57 and healthy. But one of my current prayers is asking the Lord to give me another 25 years of good health and faithful fruitfulness. I want to make my life count and leave a legacy that will inspire others. How about you?

  1. Pastor Ken,
The ways that you've listed as ways that you would spend the last six months of your life expresses the very heart of God! You would leave an awesome legacy in writing and video sharing your love as you get ready to be with King Jesus! Self examination & seeking out who you would need to ask forgiveness from~God fearing…yet His way! May God give you the desire of your heart for 15 more healthy & fruitful years, but add to that, many more….Special blessings to you & yours Pastor Ken! Thank you for loving Jesus & His!!!

  2. Ken,

My list exactly, almost verbatim. But you're right, the follow up question is the clincher. Working at a hospital on an Oncology floor for the past twelve years has given me a unique perspective on death, and not one that I ever would have asked for. Believe me, when I applied for the job, I was praying to get in on the birthing center! God had other plans, though, and I can honestly say that I wouldn't trade anything He has taught me there for a happier experience.

As for your point, well said. I really want to take inventory of my past, and move more into that list whether I have six months or 25 years to go. Then, there's always the possibility we'll see Him coming on the clouds……..

  3. If I only had to 6 months live I would document as much as I could of my kids' lives from birth until now so they never ever forget how much I love them and what a special gift from God they were to me. I would add in as many little life lessons, bits of advice and wishes that I have for them so as to guide them in becoming kind, loving and caring adults with a heart for Jesus and a burning desire to live for and serve God every day in everything they do. It truly is my biggest fear to leave this earth and not be here to prepare my children to stay true in their faith and encourage them throughout their walk with God.

  4. Gracene,

Your focus on and for your children is awesome and so inspiring. Keep at it. You are making a huge difference in their lives'.

    God's best to you.
